Family eSIM: one per person, a shared plan, or one unlimited eSIM as a hotspot?

Saily, Airalo, Yesim, Holafly, Sirocco: what each brand allows for a family, from their help pages read on 26/10/2026, and the cost for four travellers in Morocco with the brands we compare.

The short answer. There are three ways to get a whole family online abroad: one eSIM per phone (Airalo, Yesim and Sirocco, among others), one plan shared between several phones (Saily, up to 5 people, except unlimited and Ultra plans), or one unlimited eSIM whose connection a parent shares as a hotspot (limited to 1GB a day with Holafly in Morocco). In Morocco, for 4 travellers, 7 days and at least 5GB each, the total ranged from €32.40 to €119.60 on 26/10/2026, among the brands we compare.

eSIMeter is published by Mocom SAS, which also sells Sirocco eSIMs. The ranking rule is the same for every brand.

Three ways to get a family online

1. One eSIM per phone

Each traveller has their own eSIM and their own data. If one parent heads out with a child while the other stays at the hotel, everyone stays connected. If a teenager uses up their data, nobody else is affected.

What the brands say on their help pages, read on 26/10/2026:

  • Airalo: "You can purchase up to 10 eSIMs in a single order", and the plans don't have to be the same.
  • Yesim: 1 to 10 eSIMs per order (its MultiSIM feature). Within one order, all eSIMs have the same destination, the same data, the same length and the same activation date.
  • Sirocco: one eSIM per traveller, up to 10, one payment for everyone, and 10% off the total from 3 eSIMs in the same order.

2. A shared plan

One plan, used by several phones. That's how Saily's shared plans work:

  • up to 4 people on top of the account holder, so 5 at most;
  • all plans except Ultra and unlimited plans;
  • sharing happens before activation, and only in the Saily app;
  • everyone invited has to install the app and sign in with a Saily account.

Worth knowing: the data is pooled. With a 10GB shared plan for four, that's 10GB for the whole family, not 10GB each. Saily's prices aren't publicly available, so we can't compare them.

3. One unlimited eSIM, shared as a hotspot

One parent buys an unlimited eSIM and shares the connection over Wi-Fi with the other phones. Simple on paper, but three limits matter:

  • Hotspot use is often capped. In Morocco, Holafly allows 1GB of hotspot data a day. For three other phones, that's not much.
  • Everyone has to stay near the phone that's sharing. As soon as you split up, the others lose their connection.
  • The sharing phone's battery drains fast.

Sirocco allows hotspot use in Morocco; Airalo allows it as long as your phone and the network support it.

The cost for four in Morocco

A 7-day trip, 4 travellers, public prices checked on 26/10/2026, without promo codes.

Brand 4 × at least 5GB 4 × unlimited
Sirocco (10% off from 3 eSIMs) €32.40 €97.20
Airalo €38.00 €114.00
Holafly (unlimited only) no 5GB plan €119.60
Saily (shared plan) prices not publicly available prices not publicly available

With 5GB each, Sirocco is the cheapest of the brands we compare, thanks to its group discount: €5.60 less than Airalo. For unlimited data too, by €16.80 ahead of Airalo. Our check found a public group discount only at Sirocco.

And one Holafly unlimited eSIM shared between everyone? €29.90 for 7 days, but with only 1GB of hotspot data a day for the three other phones.

How much data does each person need?

It depends on how you use your phone and on the Wi-Fi where you stay. If your accommodation has good Wi-Fi, mobile data is mostly for when you're out: maps, messages, photos. The big users are video and video calls. For a teenager who watches videos, unlimited data or a bigger plan avoids running out halfway through the holiday. A young child without a phone needs nothing.

Some brands let you top up a single traveller's eSIM during the trip: that's often cheaper than buying big for everyone from the start.

Children

  • The child's phone must support eSIM. An EID number should appear in the settings (iPhone: Settings > General > About, EID line; Android: Settings > About phone > SIM status, EID line; the path varies by brand). Older or entry-level phones don't always support it.
  • A phone locked to a network won't accept another brand's eSIM.
  • Keeping an eye on usage: with Sirocco, Child mode lets a child see their remaining data and ask for more without seeing any prices; the parent approves or declines. We haven't yet found an equivalent at the other brands: if you know of one, tell us and we'll add it.

What we suggest

Your family The simplest option
Everyone has a phone and you often split up One eSIM per person
Small amounts of data, always together, everyone happy to use the Saily app A shared plan (up to 5 people with Saily)
One heavy user, the others hardly any One eSIM each, with more data for the heavy user
You want a single purchase A brand that sells several eSIMs in one order (Airalo, Yesim, Sirocco)

Whatever you choose: install the eSIMs at home, on Wi-Fi, before you leave, and turn off data roaming on your usual lines once you're there. If your plan doesn't include the destination, each line left on roaming can be charged: in Morocco, £8 a day per phone with Vodafone and with Three (customers who joined or upgraded since 18 December 2025), and €4.99 per MB with eir in Ireland, according to their price lists read on 26/10/2026.
