Morocco travel information for UK and Irish travellers (emergency numbers, embassy, money, driving, mobile data, eSIM)

Emergency numbers, British and Irish embassies, dirhams, driving with a UK or Irish licence, mobile networks, roaming costs and eSIMs compared: the Morocco essentials, every fact sourced and dated.

Checked on 26 October 2026. Every fact links to its official source, listed at the bottom of the page.

The essentials

  • Emergencies: the UK Foreign Office lists police 190, ambulance and fire 150, and the gendarmerie 177. Other official sources give different numbers: see the table below.
  • British Embassy Rabat: 28 Avenue S.A.R. Sidi Mohammed Souissi, Rabat. Embassy of Ireland: 6 Avenue Marrakesh, Hassan, Rabat, +212 537 269 000.
  • Passports: the FCDO says your passport "must have an 'expiry date' at least 3 months after the date you arrive"; Ireland's DFA asks for "a minimum validity of 6 months". Check the rules for every traveller on your government's page.
  • Money: the Moroccan dirham (MAD), a "closed 'non-convertible' currency", according to the FCDO.
  • Mobile data: if your plan doesn't include Morocco, £8 a day with Vodafone and with Three (recent plans), €4.99 per MB with eir. For a 7-day stay, an eSIM with at least 5GB cost from €9.00 to €9.50 on 26/10/2026, among the brands we compare.

Emergency numbers

Service UK Foreign Office (FCDO) Ireland (DFA)
Police 190 12/112
Gendarmerie (outside towns) 177 —
Fire 150 15
Ambulance 150 150

The official sources we read don't agree. France Diplomatie (updated 15/09/2026) and the German Embassy in Rabat list 19 for the police in towns, and 15 for fire and ambulance; the German Embassy adds that from a mobile you can dial 19 or 112. All the sources that list the gendarmerie give 177. We'll publish a single list once a Moroccan official source settles it. Sources: FCDO "Getting help" (updated 19/08/2026), DFA Morocco travel advice (updated 16/07/2025), France Diplomatie "Contacts utiles", German Embassy Rabat "Notfallnummern". All read on 26/10/2026.

Your embassy and consulates

United Kingdom. British Embassy Rabat: 28 Avenue S.A.R. Sidi Mohammed Souissi, 10105 (BP 45), Rabat. Its GOV.UK page gives no phone number: for emergencies, it points to an online contact form. A GOV.UK publication updated on 8 April 2025 gives +212 537 63 33 33 for the embassy, "24/7 service via our Consular Contact Centre in Malaga". British Consulate General Casablanca: Villa Les Salurges, 36 rue de la Loire – Polo, Casablanca, +212 522 85 74 00. There are also honorary consuls in Agadir, Marrakech and Tangier; GOV.UK doesn't publish their addresses. If something has happened to a friend or relative abroad, the FCDO in London answers 24 hours a day on +44 20 7008 5000 (020 7008 5000 from the UK).

Ireland. Embassy of Ireland, Morocco: 6 Avenue Marrakesh, Hassan, Rabat 10010, +212 537 269 000. When the embassy is closed, the DFA gives a duty number for emergencies: +212 666 933 599, or the Department's Duty Officer in Dublin on +353 1 408 2000. Honorary consuls: Agadir (Hotel Kenzi Europa, Boulevard du 20 Août, +212 5 2882 1212) and Casablanca (57, Boulevard Abdelmoumen, Rue Salim Cherkaoui, Résidence Al Hadi B20, 5th floor, +212 5 2227 2721).

Entering Morocco

The rules depend on your passport. Check them before you book, for every traveller, children included:

  • British passport: FCDO page "Morocco – Entry requirements" (updated 19 August 2026). It says: "To enter Morocco, your passport must have an 'expiry date' at least 3 months after the date you arrive."
  • Irish passport: DFA page "Morocco" (updated 16 July 2025). It says that "Irish passports should have a minimum validity of 6 months at least from date of entry into Morocco", and that the Passport Card is "not accepted for travel to Morocco".

We don't summarise any further: an entry rule copied from memory can be wrong on the day you leave.

Money

  • Currency: the Moroccan dirham (MAD). The FCDO says it's a "closed 'non-convertible' currency", which "cannot be easily exchanged outside Morocco for other currencies".
  • Declaring cash: "You must declare foreign currency worth 100,000 Moroccan dirham or more (equal to around £8,000) when you enter or leave the country" (FCDO, read on 26/10/2026).

Driving

  • Traffic drives on the right.
  • With a UK licence, the FCDO says you need "both the 1968 version of the international driving permit (IDP) and your UK driving licence with you in the car". You can't buy an IDP outside the UK, and Morocco no longer accepts the 1949 version. If you stay longer than a year, you need a Moroccan licence. If you take your own car, you need a green card from your insurer.
  • With an Irish licence, the DFA advises you to "bring a full Irish driver's licence and international driving permit".

Mobile network and internet

The networks. ANRT, Morocco's telecoms regulator, publishes the licence specifications of three mobile operators: Itissalat Al-Maghrib (Maroc Telecom), Médi Télécom (Orange Maroc) and Wana Corporate (inwi).

Roaming, if your plan doesn't include Morocco. Plans that include Morocco aren't listed (Three's Complete plans, for example, include all Go Roam destinations).

What we don't show yet, and why

  • Tipping: we haven't found an official source. We don't publish rules of thumb.
  • Plugs, voltage and local time: being checked with the International Electrotechnical Commission and the Moroccan authorities. Morocco can change its clocks during Ramadan: we'll publish the exact time with its source.
  • Climate: Marrakech's official climate averages are still being collected.
