What is a travel eSIM, and is it cheaper than roaming?

If your plan doesn't include your destination, roaming can cost £8 a day per phone. The Morocco example, with UK and Irish tariffs read on 26 October 2026, and what a travel eSIM costs instead.

The short answer. A travel eSIM is a data plan you add to your phone before you leave, paid once, with nothing added to your bill afterwards. Roaming uses your usual plan abroad and, if your plan doesn't include the destination, it can be charged by the day or by the megabyte. In Morocco, that means £8 a day per phone with Vodafone, and with Three for customers who joined or upgraded since 18 December 2025, and €4.99 per MB with eir in Ireland, according to their price lists read on 26 October 2026. The same day, a 7-day travel eSIM for Morocco with at least 5GB cost from €9.00 to €9.50, depending on the brand, among the brands we compare.

What is an eSIM?

An eSIM is a SIM card without the card. It's built into the phone. You install it in a few minutes from a link or a QR code, with nothing to slot into the SIM tray.

It sits alongside your usual line, which stays in the phone. You keep your number for calls and texts, at your network's rates. Mobile data goes through the travel eSIM.

Most travel eSIMs are data only, with no local number. WhatsApp, FaceTime and Signal keep working with your usual account, because they run over the internet.

What an eSIM changes compared with roaming

Roaming means your usual plan connects to a network abroad. The EU's "roam like at home" rule covers the EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Moldova and Ukraine. If you're with an Irish network, you can use your plan there at home prices, within the limits of your contract. The UK isn't covered by that rule, so UK networks set their own roaming prices, in Europe as well as further afield. Outside those areas, the European Commission warns that roaming "can be expensive". Three differences matter.

1. You know the price before you go. A travel eSIM is paid once, for a set amount of data and a set number of days. Roaming outside your plan is charged as you use it: by the day with most UK networks, by the megabyte with some others.

2. Nothing is added to your bill. When the eSIM's data runs out, the connection stops. You top up if you want to. With roaming outside your plan, each day or each megabyte is added to the bill.

3. With a family, every line counts. Four phones roaming means four charges. With eSIMs, each person has their own data, paid in advance.

Bill shock in figures: the Morocco example

Morocco is outside Europe. Here's what UK and Irish networks charge for mobile data there if your plan doesn't include it, with no add-on.

UK networks

Vodafone (Pay Monthly plans bought since 11 August 2021) £8 a day (Morocco is in Zone D) Out-of-bundle prices from 14 April 2026, read 26/10/2026

Irish networks

Network Mobile data in Morocco, no add-on Source
eir (bill pay) €4.99 per MB Roaming destinations, bill pay, read 26/10/2026
Vodafone Ireland €4.99 a day with RED Roaming (Vodafone Unlimited customers are opted in automatically), or €5.00 a day for 1GB at standard rates; then €0.06 per MB Roaming rates and travelling abroad pages, read 26/10/2026
Three Ireland €4.99 per MB (bill pay and prepay) Bill Pay price guide (April 2026) and Prepay price guide (December 2025), read 26/10/2026

Plans that include Morocco aren't in these tables. Three's Complete plans, for example, include roaming in all Go Roam destinations, Morocco among them. If your plan includes Morocco, you don't need an eSIM: check in your account or app before you go.

What these prices mean in practice:

  • With Vodafone or Three at £8 a day, a week in Morocco costs £56 per phone.
  • For a family of four with Vodafone or Three whose plans don't include Morocco, that's £224 for the week (4 phones × 7 days × £8).
  • With eir at €4.99 per MB, 100MB costs €499.
  • With EE or O2, there's no surprise data bill, but no mobile data either unless you pay for an add-on.

Europe: the other surprise for UK travellers

If your plan doesn't include roaming in Europe, UK networks charge a daily fee, per line:

Network Daily charge in Europe (Spain, for example) Plans concerned
EE £2.72 a day Handset and SIM plans launched from 7 July 2021
Vodafone £2.75 a day (Zone B) Plans bought since 11 August 2021, price from 14 April 2026
Three £2.75 a day Joined or upgraded on or after 18 December 2025, from 1 April 2026
Three £2 a day Joined or upgraded between 1 October 2021 and 17 December 2025

O2 isn't in this table: its Pay Monthly plans include EU roaming up to 25GB at no extra cost. A week in Spain at £2.72 to £2.75 a day comes to £19.04 to £19.25 per phone. On 26 October 2026, the cheapest travel eSIM for Spain with at least 5GB for 7 days, among the brands we compare, was €7.10 (Sirocco, 7GB). Irish networks follow the EU rule: no daily charge in Spain.

What an eSIM costs instead

On 26 October 2026, we checked the public prices of the brands we compare for a 7-day trip to Morocco, with at least 5GB:

Brand Plan Price
Sirocco 5GB, 7 days €9.00
Airalo 5GB, 7 days €9.50
Holafly no 5GB plan (unlimited only) €29.90 for 7 days unlimited

For four travellers, the same trip costs from €32.40 (Sirocco, 10% off from 3 eSIMs) to €119.60 (Holafly, unlimited). The full comparison, including unlimited plans, is in our guide "Best eSIM for Morocco". eSIMeter compares prices in euros, as shown on the brands' websites. eSIMeter is published by Mocom SAS, which also sells Sirocco eSIMs. The ranking rule is the same for every brand.

When an eSIM isn't worth it

  • If your plan already includes your destination: it's in your contract or your account. O2's Pay Monthly plans, for example, include EU roaming up to 25GB.
  • If you're with an Irish network and travelling within the EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Moldova or Ukraine: your plan works at home prices, within the limits of your contract.
  • If your phone doesn't support eSIM, or if it's locked to a network.
  • If you need a local number to make calls there: most travel eSIMs don't come with one. A local SIM card can do the job, but you'll have to buy it there, with ID.

How to switch to an eSIM, in four steps

  1. Check each phone. Look for the EID number in the settings (iPhone: Settings > General > About, EID line; Android: Settings > About phone > SIM status, EID line; the path varies by brand). If an EID number appears, the phone supports eSIM. It mustn't be locked to a network.
  2. Choose the plan for the real length of your trip and how you use your phone. Compare the price of the whole trip, not the headline "from" price.
  3. Install the eSIM at home, on Wi-Fi, before you leave. Plans start according to each brand's rules: on installation or on your first connection abroad. Read the plan details.
  4. When you arrive, choose the eSIM for mobile data and turn on roaming for that line only. Keep data roaming off on your usual line: that's the one that triggers the daily charge or the per-MB rate.

Key points

  • If you're going outside your plan's roaming area, check what your plan says about your destination.
  • If your plan doesn't include it, roaming can be charged by the day or by the megabyte: in Morocco, £8 a day with Vodafone and Three (recent plans), €4.99 per MB with eir (price lists read on 26/10/2026).
  • A travel eSIM fixes the price in advance. In Morocco, at least 5GB for 7 days cost from €9.00 to €9.50 among the brands we compare.
  • With a family, each phone needs its own eSIM, or a shared hotspot.
